At first glance, it would seem nearly impossible that TASOMACHI: Behind the Twilight was developed by only one person, but this stunningly beautiful platformer has, indeed, been brought to life exclusively by a Japanese game developer who goes by “nocras.” And all of his hard work will soon be available for you to enjoy if you have a gaming PC, as the game is finally launching April 14 on Steam and GOG.
Of course, this isn’t nocras’s first rodeo, as he’s credited for his work in a bevy of AAA titles, such as Final Fantasy XIII-2, Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, and Xenoblade Chronicles 2. But as much as he has enjoyed his time creating content for those high-profile releases, he has expressed a sense of disappointment that old-school platforming games have become less prominent in recent years.
nocras expressed this sentiment in a recent statement, saying:
I enjoy making 2D and 3D art for myself and others, but I felt a need to express myself and the beauty of the world, which I could only do properly through a video game of my own. It also feels like the world unfairly abandoned the collect-a-thon platformer, and I want to bring that genre back with beautiful visuals that create the same sense of melancholy and joy that I originally felt in my youth.
If you’re also a fan of the platforming genre, you can rest assured that TASOMACHI: Behind the Twilight is aiming to recapture your youth, too. Main character Yukumo’s traversal options include double jumps, dashes, and other traditional movements in her quest across an East Asia-inspired world full of cities, dungeons, and temples, and more. It’s a bright and colorful game that promotes relaxation rather than immense challenge, a point driven home by its complete lack of a life gauge.
So get ready to kick back and relax with some classic platforming when TASOMACHI: Behind the Twilight launches exclusively for PC on April 14.
