2022 is going to be an exciting year for indie games as there are already a variety of unique platfomers in store for us. From the return of Cuphead to the beauty of Planet of Lana, let’s take a glimpse into the future.
Cuphead: The Delicious last course
Cuphead: The Delicious Last Course, after years of anticipation is finally making its way to fans on June 3o. This DLC has a completely new island to explore (it’s actually called DLC Island), another character to play as Ms. Chalice, more devilish bosses, a bigger arsenal of weapons, and extra songs to listen to by the amazing Kris Maddigan. Thankfully, this won’t be an Xbox-timed console exclusive as it will be releasing on the Nintendo Switch, PC, PS4, and Xbox One on the same day. We can’t wait to be put back into the ringer again.
Have a nice death
Sad that there’s no sign of Hollow Knight: Silksong? Well, Have A Nice Death might be a good substitute. Heck, it could be even better. Releasing as a Steam Early Access game in March, you’ll be slashing your way through levels as Death. The game’s semi-monochromatic style looks gorgeous with its hand-drawn animations. Along the way, you’ll be finding 30 different weapons and spells for this roguelite adventure, in addition to items and upgrades you’ll get based on your performance. Similar to a game like Hades, it’s all procedurally generated, so no run will be the same.
From Death to the “Demon of Bad Taste,” Hell Pie is a unique 3D platformer has you play as a little devil named Nate. In this game, you’re tasked with acquiring the ingredients of Satan’s birthday pie. Alongside you is Nate’s pet angel, which can be used as a grapple hook or used a chained weapon. In the scene of 3D platformers, this might be the most odd. The game looks exciting as you’re freely exploring the environments of Earth in a Super Mario-like style. There are also some nasty bosses you’ll need to overcome to retrieve those ingredients. It’s releasing sometime in 2022 with no specific release date at the time of writing.
Planet of Lana
Delve into a stunning sci-fi platforming adventure Planet of Lana when it drops into orbit in 2022. Set under the backdrop of a war, you are exploring the stunning landscapes of the world with an adorable pet companion. You’ll be solving puzzles, making death-defying jumps, and sneaking around enemies. The developer of the game Wishfully says on the Steam listing that we will “use our reflexes and survive challenging action sequences,” so it won’t be a wistful adventure in a picturesque world. This will be the Swedish studio’s first game.
The Darkest Tales
Playing as a teddy bear, we’ll be diving into a grim fantasy world that looks spectacular and dark at the same time with The Darkest Tales. Rather than the Disney tales we’ve known and loved, the fantasy characters represented in the game have a tinge of darkness attached to them. The Little Mermaid is now a sea witch rather than a beautiful being of the sea, and the Gingerbread Men are out to kill the teddy bear. Your quest within this world is to save your owner Alicia, who is now no longer a child. The bosses and enemies look well-animated as you strike them down with your dual blades and arrows made out of scissors and needles. There’s a demo out now on Steam if you’re intrigued by this horrific twist on our favorite childhood stories. It is schedued to come out sometime in 2022.
